 Hopkinson Smith Soloist

After sonatas, partitas and suites 4, 5 and 6 of JS Bach, and Hopkinson Smith finishes his complete cycle of recordings of Bach’s works with the first 3 suites he himself transcribed for theorbo.

Bach was an environmentalist musician, masterful recycler of his own compositions, he made a lot of arrangements, from one instrument to another, or a combination of instruments to another. Many of his works seem designed on a fairly abstract level, beyond any specific instrument, and it was perfectly natural for the pragmatic and the ear of the eighteenth century to accommodate the instrument of their choice.
