With about 300 songs for piano accompanied songs, Max Reger is one of the most prolific and versatile song composers of all time. The piano song constitutes a compositional challenge for him and he does not regard it as just a by-product, but “the subtlest interpretation imaginable of a secret lyrical mood”.
The songs and chants gathered here, some of which have been recorded for the very first time, originate from Reger´s middle and latter style period. Their contrast is now and then amazing and if it were not for the typical Reger harmonies with their incessant sometimes breathless changes, then one could doubt, whether one composer alone was the creator of these songs.
Sadly Regers vocal works receive little acclaim nowadays. If Regers name appears in musical life, then it is usually as the creator of instrumental compositions of chamber music, organ works or orchestral pieces. One of the reasons for this is definitely the enormous technical demands, which require a vocalist of the highest quality as well as an accomplished virtuoso pianist. Markus Schäfer and Ernst Breidenbach meet these challenges masterfully and convert this recording into a breathtaking experience.
