Who has not heard of Carl Maria von Weber, but who knows Sigismund Neukomm? Two composers whose lives were eventful as well as successful, but who will be remembered in totally different ways in music history.

Weber, one of the greats, a thinker, created music, which was characteristic of a new form of harmonies, which were ahead of their time and his use of timbre in a way that had not been seen in this form until then and was revolutionary. It was of significant importance later to the works of Mendelssohn and Nicolai and even Wagner. His clarinet quintet was not only a brilliant piece for clarinet, it also created completely new possibilities for expression through the instrument and transports the listener into a myriad of feelings: jovial calm, sudden fright, tumult and a horrible escape, then finally salvation and composure…

Neukomm, much travelled and extremely well educated belongs with those, whose names (unjustly) were soon forgotten, despite the fact that in his time as composer, artist, arranger, conductor and organiser, he contributed enormously to the musical world. He was not avantgarde, but stuck to his musical roots – the Viennese classics of Haydn and Mozart. Despite this and yet maybe because of this, his quintet is an important reflection of his time and makes us curious for more….
