The Gewandhaus-Quartett is the oldest and without any break existing string quartet. With its’ 200 year history, this ensemble from Leipzig shows a big piece of Occidental music history.
Close after it’s founding in 1808 the quartet was built up, through the former Gewandhaus concert master Heinrich August Mattäi, to become a huge part of the Leipzig music- and concert-scene, also to highlight the Saxon music-tradition. From the year of its foundation the quartet has continued successfully from generation to generation.
In February of this year 2009, the Gewandhaus-Quartet released, this 4-album set to coincide with 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s birth. This set comprises the complete string quartets of this exceptional composer.
