A Portrait of Elgar. NI 1769

Three CDs of Elgar make an ideal celebration of this composer in the year which marks the 150th anniversary of his birth. Included are some of the composer's most famous works, such as the Enigma Variations, Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Cockaigne Overture and the Introduction and Allegro. What makes this collection even more appealing is the inclusion of lesser-known but equally delightful works such as the Spanish Lady Suite, Nursery Suite and much else.

'Boughton elicits solid, brilliant, feeling performances ' As these performances meld something of Boult's propulsion and body with an approximation of Barbirolli's swing, they might serve as the ideal introduction. This production stands strongly recommended.' Fanfare (USA)

"...The set as a whole can be heartily commended to newcomers to Elgar’s music, and despite the fact that many of the most important works are missing – no symphonies, no
concertos – they give a pretty comprehensive view of his orchestral works outside that sphere. It is just a pity that the booklet notes are not more enlightening.
