Eugene Ormandy was a memorable friend of mainstream modern American music. And his numerous recordings of composers he championed for Columbia Records are often the equal of better known advocates like Howard Hanson. On this Naxos disc, you'll find three wonderful postwar American symphonies by Roy Harris, William Schuman and Walter Piston played by the always-superb Philadelphia Orchestra. While I wish Naxos would make reissues from the original tapes rather than LPs, these transfers are as good as any others I have heard--although Pristine has refurbished some Hanson discs with spectacular results. Those reservations aside, these are superb performances and you cannot lose by downloading them.
