Those who think of Malcolm Arnold as the composer of sparkling orchestral music and highly successful film scores will be delighted and perhaps surprised at the feast of smaller-scale treasures on this recording, several of them recorded here for the first time. They span virtually his entire composing life from the early Constant Lambert-inspired Overture for Wind Octet to the enigmatic Duo (Divertimento) for Two Clarinets written after serious mental illness and a number of years of compositional silence.

"The East Winds blow in with a delightful Arnold selection

As a professional player, leader of the trumpet section in the LPO early in his career, Sir Malcolm Arnold was an enthusiastic composer of wind music. East Winds, made up of talented young players, here give brilliant performances which consistently bring out the wit of the writing. Even if this doesn’t evolve into a series covering all of Arnold’s wind music ...this is a well chosen and wide-ranging selection that makes a delightful sequence... It says much for the performances and the accessibility of each work that the whole sequence makes such easy listening."

Edward Greenfield - Gramophone magazine - August 2007

"...The five musicians of East Winds together withtheir guest players perform Arnold’s wind chamber music with fine accomplishment throughout. It is hard to find fault with these fresh and engaging interpretations that have the spontaneous feel of a live performance. The timbre of the instruments is very well captured by the Naxos engineers with only the barest amount of fierceness from the horn. Those looking for a recording ofArnold’s wind chamber music have no need to look elsewhere... On this Naxos release Sir Malcolm is in his element with these excellently performed wind chamber scores and I was with him all the way."

Michael Cookson - MusicWeb-International.com - May 2007

"Sir Malcolm Arnold has always been an enthusiastic composer of wind music. East Winds, made up of talented young wind-players, here give brilliant performances which consistently bring out the wit of the writing. This is a well-chosen and wide-ranging selection of works which make up a delightful sequence. Maybe the best known of all these works is one of the earliest and shortest, the Three Shanties, Op. 4, written in 1942 when he was still playing in the LPO, a piece intended to entertain his colleagues. Already the virtuosity of the writing is astonishing, displaying Arnold’s great gift for writing complex counterpoint which is yet immediately accessible. That also applies to the equally winning performance of the Op. 35 Divertimento…East Winds bring out the fun delectably."   ***
