Volume 3 of the complete Rossini symphonic overtures continues the pattern of placing rarities such as the lively student work, Grand’overtura ‘obbligata a contrabasso’, and Matilde of Shabran, set in medieval Spain, alongside perennial hits such as The Italian Girl in Algiers and La Cenerentola (Cinderella), said to have been written in just three weeks. ClassicsToday.com described Volume 2 (NX 0934) of this series as “delightful…amazing…strongly recommended”.

"...It will definitely be interesting to follow Christian Benda and the Prague Sinfonia Orchestra in this series to see where they go next and where they eventually end up. Meanwhile, the performances on the present volume continue to uphold the high standards of execution and spirited enthusiasm of the previous volumes. Strongly recommended."

Jerry Dubins - Fanfare - May/June 2014

"...there’s nothing here that isn’t charming, gorgeously played, and wonderfully recorded. Balances are very natural, and articulation is crisp and clean.I can’t think of a better way to spend an hour musically, and nothing here is anything less than excellent. At the Naxos price, it’s very much worth it…Enjoy!"

Brian Wigman - Classical Net - March 2014

"... the playing is stunning, and the conductor falls into none of the usual traps. Nothing is too fast or too bombastic. The sound is excellent."

Donald R Vroon - American Record Guide - May/June 2014

"In earlier reviews I referred to the first volume in this collection of Rossini’s Overtures as being “an admirable start to what looks like being a very desirable series” and the second as being “another excellent disc”. Now, and with still more to come, I am wondering what else I can say about what is turning out to be one of the most enjoyable series Naxos has produced. Certainly this third disc is at least as good as its predecessors in terms of performance and recording. In terms of the interest and originality of its content it is probably the best so far... here the various changes of texture, character and dynamic are placed with deftness. This is a further excellent addition to an immensely enjoyable series."

John Sheppard - MusicWeb-International.com - February 2014

"...The performances are sympathetic and nimble, if not quite in the highest league ... a recommendation…cannot be denied."

Colin Anderson - International Record Review - January 2014

"...This series continues with an appealing mix of familiar and unfamiliar works, all of which are well worth getting to know. The overtures to La Cenerentola, L’Italiana in Algeri, and Tancredi are deservedly popular, while those to Maometto II, Matilde di Shabran, and La cambiale di matrimonio have plenty of interesting and enjoyable music that should endear them to music lovers. As in previous issues in this series, the performances are very good. The overture to L’Italiana offers a good place to start, with its impressively unified ensemble and athletic dialogue between sections. Rhythms are consistently crisp and clean, tempos lively, and the balances favor those delightful Czech woodwinds. If you’ve been collecting this series, don’t hesitate for a moment before getting this latest release."

David Hurwitz - ClassicsToday.com - December 2013

 "...Absolutely sparkling..."
