Turina: Piano Music, Vol. 9 – Jordi Masó

Jordi Masó’s critically acclaimed survey of Turina’s complete piano music continues to unearth exciting novelties. Turina’s gift for evocative writing is explored in the early and little-known Coins de Séville which fuses Andalusían folk music with French impressionism to remarkable effect. The virtuosic La leyenda de la Giralda evokes the bell-tower of Seville Cathedral, a symbol of the city, in four vivid episodes. The streets, sounds, and rhythms of his native city infuse much of the music of Turina and in Por las calles de Sevilla and his final work, Desde mi terraza, their lure is felt with a fierce intensity.

"...Maso brilliantly advocates a fascinating but overlooked Spanish composer. The works on this program, evoking Turin’s native city of Seville, works of art, literature, and even other contemporary Spanish composers, reveal the distince voice. Maso delivers all of this with an easy fluidity, expressing the spirit of the works ... The sound is clean and warm. maso’s remarkable versatility and vibrancy secure interest in the project. I admire his dedication in promoting other Spanish composers past and present, from Jseph Soler to benet Casablancas. I look forward to future volumes."

Sang Woo Kang - American Record Guide - January/February 2014

"... in Maso you have an ideally committed and affectionate master of the idiom, finely recorded."
