The distinguished composer and pianist John McCabe has written in almost every genre, and has long been one of Britain’s leading musicians. In his choral music he has taken a variety of texts—including anonymous sixteenth-century Latin, and the poems of Henry Vaughan and Thomas Hardy—and fashioned them into powerful settings. He evokes a rich variety of vocal colours and textures, remaining at all times communicative and vital, not least in the beautiful Marian Carols and the contrasting riches of the Mangan Triptych.

"... The recordings were made by the BBC in 2009 and 2010, and are aurally everything that a fine choral recording should be. They have a sense of space around the choir, are resonant to support blend, but keep the often complex textures clearly differentiated, and place the solo voices in the same believable acoustic. The chorus, the redoubtable BBC Singers, is as perfect as one would expect in technique, tone, and expression, and David Hill, who has done some fine work of late for the Naxos label, has outdone himself here in the imaginative and perceptive shaping of these choral gems. Iain Farrington provides a model of intelligent support in four of the pieces. It doesn’t get better than this."

Ronald E Grames - Fanfare - July/August 2013

"...McCabe’s musical style is very muchhis own. His language can be challening and most of the music on this disc is pretty challenging to sing too, as well as conduct... Many of the
works on this disc demand, and recieve, virtuoso singing from the BBC Singers ... their accuracy, rhythmic control and sheer fire power are mightily impressive. Davi Hill more than
has the measure of the music, and Iain Farrington, a familiar name, provides fine organ accompaniments ..."

"... demanding listening, made easier by the superlative performances of the BBC Singers..."
