Tchaikovsky affectionately referred to his first symphony as a “sin from his sweet youth”. The work was only first heard in its entirety on February 3, 1868 under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein. Praised by many reviewers for its wealth of melodies, the symphony unfairly stands in the shadows of the composer’s “three great” symphonies, namely, the Fourth, the Fifth and above all, the Sixth. It can be heard in this recording from November 2009, which also includes several pieces from Tchakowsky’s music to the play “Snowflakes”.

"Kitaenko gives us a solid, enjoyble rendering of the Winter Dreams symphony, with perhaps more emphasis on Schumannesque vigor and drive than pensiveness... The SACD sound is rich and full, imparting a meloownes to the strings and burnished glow to the brass."

Lawrence Hansen -  American Record Guide - January/February 2013

"... A disc not to be missed on any account."

Ivan March - Gramophone magazine - Awards Issue 2012

"Aided by a superb recording, Kitajenko secures outstandingly responsive playing. Highlights are the stmospheric slow movement and some nimble string passagework in the Finale."  ****

Erik Levi - BBC Music magazine - November 2012
