The Dvorák family’s well-known stay in America beginning in 1892 had a number of implications for Dvor?ák’s 18-year-old composition student Josef Suk. For one, Suk had to do for a longer period of time without his teacher, adviser and fatherly friend. For another, he was also separated from Dvorák’s daughter Otylka, with whom a relationship was beginning to bud. After the return of the Dvoráks, it was some years before the two finally married in 1898. Josef Suk distilled the four-movement orchestral suite Pohádka op. 16 from his own fairytale drama Radúz a Mahulena, written in his wedding year 1898.
