This program imagines what a Christmas concert at the Munich Residence might have been like. It includes works by composers who may well be unknown to today’s listeners, but who played a significant role at the Munich Court during the Baroque age, e.g. Johann Christoph Pez and Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco. Under the direction of its concertmaster Rüdiger Lotter, the Hofkapelle München performs works from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries on original instruments. Since its foundation in 1992 as the Neue Hofkapelle München, the ensemble quickly established itself as one of the most popular baroque orchestras in Bavaria.

Its guest soloists include lutenist Axel Wolf, who played a major role in many of the celebrated baroque operas performed in Sir Peter Jonas’ era and who is highly successful as a soloist, as well as Stefan Schilli, solo oboist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, who is in great demand as a baroque oboist, for example in the ensemble “L’accademia giocosa”.

"Here we have an interesting and enjoyable all-instrumental change of pace from the usual  choral holiday album... The Hofkapelle München (Munich Court Orchestra) is an excellent period ensemble that has been  "instrumental" in exploring the music history of southern Germany. Director Lotter is also a virtuoso baroque violinist, as he proves in the Biber piece. Performances are very good all around, with first-rate work from soloists Stefan Schilli(oboe), Eva Fegers and Anne-Suse Enssle (recorders), and Axel Wolf (lute). High-quality sound and an interesting booklet wrap up an appealing package."
