Not only was it a musical adventure: Baritone Thomas E. Bauer and pianist Siegfried Mauser took Schubert’s “Winterreise” on tour from Moskow to Peking via the Trans-Siberian Railroad. These concerts presented the opportunity for Schubert’s music to encounter cultures with completely different emotional backgrounds, experiences and traditions, making their peoples all the more open, curious and spontaneous in their reactions to Schubert’s journey into a strange land. The result: exceptional, highly inspired interpretations of this great Lied cycle.
