Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake – Russian National Orchestra, Mikhail Pletnev

This download features a complete recording of Tchaikovsky’s ballet by the star conductor Mikhail Pletnev and his Russian National Orchestra.

Composed in 1875 – 76, this absolute masterpiece of the Russian orchestral repertoire has come to be regarded as the very quintessence of Russian ballet. Based on an ancient German legend and Russian folk tales, the libretto by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltzer tells the tragic story of Prince Siegfried and his love for Princess Odette, a captive of the evil sorcerer von Rothbart who by night turns her into a swan.

The release on CD marked the twentieth anniversary of the Russian National Orchestra in 2010, and the Orchestra’s debut on Ondine. Founded by Mikhail Pletnev in 1990, the Orchestra quickly reached a position of eminence in Russia, and according to a recent listing by the magazine Gramophone ranks among the top ten international orchestras.

The recording was made by the Emil Berliner Studios at the Great Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory.

‘With his Russian National Orchestra on devastating form, Pletnev does it supremely well… It’s a superb achievement.’

Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 8 April 2010

Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake – Russian National Orchestra, Mikhail Pletnev

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is one of the supreme ballet scores of the nineteenth century. The libretto by Vladimir Begichev and Vasily Geltzer, based on an ancient German legend and on Russian folk-tales, tells the unique and tragic love story of Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette. The Princess is a captive of the evil sorcerer von Rothbart who turns her into a swan by night. The colourfully orchestrated score is full of drama and dripping with some of the composer’s most memorable tunes.

This release, celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Russian National Orchestra, marks the orchestra’s debut on Ondine; since it was founded by Mikhail Pletnev in 1990, the Russian National Orchestra has reached a position at the top of Russian orchestras, and is as well as among the top ten international orchestras (according to a recent listing by Gramophone).

Mikhail Pletnev is supreme in this repertoire and the recording has garnered some superb reviews. On 8 April 2010, Tim Ashley wrote in The Guardian: ‘With his Russian National Orchestra on devastating form, Pletnev does it supremely well… It’s a superb achievement.’

*****
Excellent performance and recording. However the notes in the booklet give a skimpy account of the story being played out on stage. With a full length performance this is inexcusable. For example, Siegfried isn't just following the swans to the lake because he is in a huff about being told to marry suitably rather than for love. He is going off with his friends to hunt the swans because it is great sport and he loves it. The wonderful dance of the swans is their expression of gratitude for his preventing their slaughter, once he understood who they were and had sworn his love of Odette. Makes a big difference to know this. And what is the storm all about in Act IV? No explanation. This is not good enough for £20. The NAXOS recordings have much better notes.

Superb performances by Pletnev and the RNO. But buyers BEWARE: When you click "Add All" you are only adding one disc. For the second disc you must scroll down and add it separately. So the cost for FLAC is 9.99 per disc, not for the whole recording.
