Rautavaara: Chamber Works – Pekka Kuusisto (violin), Paavali Jumppanen (piano)
This download features the complete works for violin and piano by Einojuhani Rautavaara (b. 1928), including many world premieres. The performers are two of the most fascinating young talents from Finland, who are known for their fresh approach: the violinist Pekka Kuusisto (‘the very embodiment of joyful music-making’ – The Toronto Star) who has made numerous acclaimed recordings for Ondine, and the pianist Paavali Jumppanen (‘immense power and an extraordinary range of colours’ – The New York Times) who for Deutsche Grammophon, has recorded the complete piano sonatas by Pierre Boulez to outstanding press acclaim. This CD also includes Rautavaara’s opus 1, the piano suite Pelimannit (The Fiddlers), which is based on traditional fiddle polska tunes. Adopting a concept by Pekka Kuusisto, this recording for the first time alternates the original fiddle tunes with the respective movements from Rautavaara’s suite.
"This brings together Rautavaara’s complete works for violin and piano, spanning his entire career from 1952 to 2005. Four of the six pieces are first recordings... This wonderful release will be of interest both to violinists and everyone on the lookout for winning chamber music."
