 Alexei Grynyuk Soloist

Winner of the Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition, Alexei Grynyuk, is to release his first solo recording of Franz Liszt.
Described as a pianist with “astonishing personality and absolutely transcendental virtuosity”, Grynyuk has always adored the giant of the piano, Franz Liszt. Tackling a selection of mighty works from the repertoire, he explores the intense poetry of the Three Petrarch Sonnets, as well as the devilish virtuosity of the Piano Sonata in B minor, MephistoWaltz No.1, and Etude No.3 ‘La Campanella’.
Grynyuk describes Liszt’s Sonata in B minor as Liszt’s attainment of “a continuous emotional journey, an unbreakable narrative with all the drama of an opera and all the divine beauty and philosophical depth of a poem”. The Mephisto-Waltz No.1 explores Liszt’s interest in the struggle between good and evil: a wicked dance between human morality against the devil’s seduction. Next, the Petrarch Sonnets: lyrical works that reflect Liszt’s love of Italian art and opera; before finally La Campanella, beautifully delicate whilst technically challenging.
Alexei Grynyuk has always remained devoted to Liszt: in the 2011 bicentenary year the pianist performed a very special concert in Kiev - the Piano Sonata in B minor before playing BOTH of the concertos! His concert performances of Liszt have also been broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
Kiev-born Grynyuk started to give public performances at the age of six before winning the Sergei Diaghilev All-Soviet-Union piano competition in Moscow a few years later. Having performed at venues such as the Kremlin, Wigmore Hall, Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the Salle Cortot, Grynyuk plays around the world both as soloist and chamber musician.

"...Definately worth a standing ovation [Sonata]. The balance of the program keeps safely in the Liszt mainstream. Grynyuk is a natural Liszt pianist and strikes just the right balance between rhetoric and reflection. He does not underplay the music; nor does he force it for pure effect. Both the Petrarch Sonnets and ’la Campanella’ are a feast for the the ears - as they should be. Both sound and the performer’s own notes are rewarding. This one’s a keep."

Alan Becker - American Record Guide - November/December 2013

"... a supreme technical virtuosity, not least in Grynyuk’s multiple shades of dynamics between p and ppp, and we find here an artist to rank with the very best. His performance of La Campanella is not only breathtaking in its control but imbued with elegance and a huge sense of fun."

Roger Nichols - BBC Music magazine - Christmas 2013

"...A most impressive Liszt debut, not to be missed."
Jed Distler - - July 2013

"A programme of familiar Liszt made thrillingly unfamiliar. Expert Liszt Sonatas may be thick on the ground but few are more richly inclusive than this latest offering by Alexei Grynyuk... Grynyuk takes his place among the finest and he is fully complemented by Orchid Classics’ sound."

Bryce Morrison - Gramophone magazine - August 2013
