Nikolai Lugansky’s first recording for ONYX. The Daily Telegraph, commenting on Lugansky, said ’He can thrill in taxing pianism through his iron will and fingers of steel, but there is an assuaging velvet quality to his tone, a natural feel for lyrical line’

Gramophone praised his ’pianism of immense techical skill, fluency and innate musical quality’

"...The sound engineering, from a locale in Moscow, is excellent. I think this is a fine album and sometimes, as in the cases of the prelude and the scherzo, a spectacular one. It should find a ready audience among fans of the pianist and anyone interested in hearing an important talent address this repertoire. This is the first release from Luganksy’s new contract with Onyx. Let’s hope there are many more to come."

CD Review  - "Velvety virtuosity...mightily impressive....an appealing recital"

BBC 3 CD Radio Review - 17 April 2010

"Characteristically , Lugansky imbues this Chopin recital with concentrated thought. Not for him any gratuitous pyrotechnics. Fleet, limpid passage-work, powerful drama and pianistic weight are harnessed when appropriate, but the consistently absorbing feature of his performance is the way they dig so deeply and lucidly into the substance beneath the surface."  ***

Geoffrey Norris

The Daily Telegraph - 24 April 2010

"If you view Chopin primarily as a revolutionary firebrand rather than an introverted dreamer, then this recital is for you. The programme - the Third Sonata followed by a jumbled selection of shorter pieces - has a rather incoherent feel. Nikolai Lugansky’s aim, however, is seemingly to show that Chopin works best when done big, turbulent and clamorous, and, by and large, he succeeds. His performance of the sonata is terrific, with monumental drama in the outer movements, a nerve-ridden scherzo, and a largo that remains notably insistent and driven precisely where some interpreters would relax both intensity and pace."  ****
