Maxim Rysanov completes his survey of all Brahms’s chamber music featuring the viola. Brahms’s friend Joseph Joachim thought that the works with clarinet would work well transcribed for viola, and Brahms lavished much care on these arrangements, as can be heard on this album and its companion, ON 4033.

"This is a tremendously enjoyable disc, particularly recommended for the viola version of the Clarinet Quintet and the daring intensity of Rysanov and friends in the G major String Quintet."

International Record Review - July-August 2011

"Although the disc is under Rysanov’s name, it’s 81 minutes of true chamber music-making. It goes without saying that Rysanov is musician enough to know when to take the lead and when to veil his tone to become a supporting voice; his partners match him in technical and interpretive subtlety. The performance of the Clarinet Quintet especially is one to return to for such scintillating playing. The two main works are separated by a pair of songs in which the voice of mezzo Alice Coote forms a perfect foil to Rysanov’s obbligato viola."

David Threasher - Gramophone Magazine - June 2011

"...If I did not already love the viola, I suspect this disc of mainly late Brahms would seduce me to its cause."

The Strad  - May 2011

"Beautifully balanced and deeply felt accounts.A remarkably successful and rewarding disc...a performance of such intensity and expressive unanimity ..."

BBC Music Magazine - April 2011

’Yearningly wonderful’

Angelo Foletto - La Repubblica (Italy) - 26 March 2011

"Viola discs are flooding the market currently.....but this Brahms chamber music CD from Maxim Rysanov steals the limelight. It’s addictive."

The Observer - 27 February 2011
