 Erik Lundkvist Soloist

After studying at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and abroad, Erik Lundkvist was appointed organist of Stockholm’s Gustav Vasa Church in 1971. He had previously served as organist of the Stockholm Concert Hall and of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Erik Lundkvist has given recitals all over the world and at his recitals he has regularly performed representative works by Swedish composers such as Torsten Nilsson, Otto Olsson, Bengt Hambraeus a. o. Conductors he has worked with include for instance Antal Dorati, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Leonard Slatkin. Erik Lundkvist is artistic director of the Stockholm Organ Festival. His recordings have brought him a succession of prestigious awards. He has been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music since 1983.

This album begins with "Prelude and Fugue in C major BWV 545" by JS Bach that has special links with Stockholm. A beautifully written and very well preserved manuscript, probably from Bach’s own hand, can be studied in the Nydahl Collection in Stockholm. During the final years of his life Bach did not compose many new works but spent a lot of time revising earlier compositions. This is particularly true of his 18 chorales, most of which were written during the Weimar years. The most famous of these, "Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele" (Adorn yourself, O dear soul) is represented on this album.

Bach was essentially self-taught but among the composers who influenced him were Georg Böhm. At the age of fifteen Bach betook himself to Lüneburg where he was admitted to St. Michael’s School. It was here that he came into contact with Georg Böhm who was the organist of the Church of St. John. "In Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele" (Rejoice greatly, O my soul) we can admire Böhm’s keyboard writing.
