Graden, Gary
Exciting and meditative music for choir by the Swedish composer Thomas Jennefelt.
Jeanette Köhn, soprano.
St. Jacob’s Chamber Choir / Gary Graden.
The Swedish composer Thomas Jennefelt (b. 1954) has produced a substantial oeuvre, particularly in the field of vocal music, ranging from choral music to opera. "Warning to the Rich" (1977) and "O Domine" (1983) brought him a large international audience at an early age. Among his more substantial a cappella works we find "Dichterliebe I-X" which was written for the Swedish Radio Choir in 1990. His music is regularly performed by leading international ensembles such as the Bavarian Radio Choir, the Swingle Singers, the Netherlands Chamber Choir and Microcosmos.
His operas include "The Yesters´Hamlet" (1990), "The Vessel" (1994) and, commissioned by the Royal Swedish Opera, "Sports and Leisure".
...The Villarosa sequences were composed as individual pieces though with the intention that they could be performed as a continuous suite. This is the first complete recording. The roots to this music are to be found in American minimalism, Baroque music and Swedish choral tradition. The text was written after the music had been composed and can be seen as instrumentation and colouring.. (Thomas Jennefelt)
"...Jennefelt’s skill and sympathy are never in doubt and must surely be attributed to the years he spent as a singer in Eric Ericsson’s chamber choir. He knows his creative craft as an insider...Another triumphant choral CD from Sweden...
