 Edo de Waart Conductor

"This is the best of me," wrote Elgar in 1900 on completing his monumental ‘Dream of Gerontius.’ Now, more than a century later, this choral masterpiece is available for the first time on Super Audio CD

Telling this story of the journey of a dying man’s soul into the afterlife, are the voices of Peter Auty, one of Britain’s leading tenors, MichelleBreedt, considered one of the leading mezzo sopranos of her generation and john Hancock, acclaimed for his refined vocalism and theatrical versatility.

Edo de Waart conducts the Royal Flemish Philharmonic in this album that is sure to remain on the shelf of any connoisseur.

"... for this new Pentatone recording (which has superb, spacious sound), Dutchman Edo de Waart secures idiomatic playing from his Belgian forces... he catches the nobility and tenderness of much of this great score, and brings fresh ears to its magnificently orchestrated textures... The inclusion of the First Symphony, one of the coposer’s finest orchestral works, is  bonus."   ****

Phili[ Reed - Choir & Organ magazine - May/June 2014

"... The First Symphony is more satisfying. The orchestra plays with lots of spirit and fairly prominent brass and percussion, so the performance has little of the nostalgia and stodginess that often afflict Elgar recordings. And perhaps best of all, Pentatone’s SACD sound is exemplary - rich and clear with lots of detail."

Paul L Althouse - American Record Guide - March/April 2014

"... The orchestra is extremely impressive, and the sound is up to Pentatone’s usual high standards ... a major prioriy."

Peter Rabinowitz - Fanfare - March/April 2014

**** (Excellent disc)     **** (Excellent Sound)

Michel Fleury - Classica magazine (France) - December 2013/January 2014

"On this evidence, Edo de Waart is clearly an Elgar conductor of no mean instinct. Both performances benfit from his judiciously clear-sighted direction, numerous felicities with Elgar’s meticulously detailed canvases are skilfully brought out, and he undoubtedly has the measure of both these large-scale masterworks... there’s an  endearing freshness, sense of new discovery and wholehearted application about this substantial undertaking and prospective purchasers can rest assured that the sound posssesses the satisfying realism, wide dynamic range and depth of sonority  ... we have come to expect from Pentatone... "

Andrew Achenbach - Gramophone magazine - December 2013
