This album demonstrates that smartly constructed compositions can have a captivating atmosphere and be a lot of fun at the same time. Henning Sieverts draws on the immense possibilities of the systematic and masterfully exploits these possibilities. With his ear attuned to continual change, Sieverts has made subtle use of symmetric material in the pieces on this album. The music grooves, twitters, warbles, frazzles, and dazzles, absorbing and impulsive as only the most vibrantly-played jazz can be. And at the bottom of it all lies a meticulously conceived structure. The result: the seemingly artificial can be so natural.

"Sieverts is the balancing act between intellectual challenge and entertaining enjoyment outstanding success: Blackbird is one of the albums of the year."

Oliver Hochkäppl - SZ München - 22 December 2009

"...Sieverts has an ear for melody amd he weaves a rich tapestry of motif and mood... Sieverts shows a fine sense for creating music that is tangible and gripping, and in doing so serves up a rich and often sumptuous experience."

Jerry D’Souza - All About Jazz - 27 July 2009

"...The album is a forest of sounds dressed in chamber-jazz foliage and orchestral shadings. The movements are spawned from a series of spontaneous impulses and timely jolts which course natural shifts, graceful dunes and shapely bends. The band seems in-tuned to their sensory inklings creating a direct link from their resires to the actions of their instruments, and making music that indulges the whimsical stride of their fancies.

Susan Frances - JazzTimes - 6 November 2009

"In minute detail of imaginary structure it is possible to open up spaces for bird-like free improvisational creativity, airy, fragrant, transparent ... Like the chirping of birds in the spring garden, so light, multiform, complex and alive, it’s Sieverts latest coup..."

Tobias Böcker - Jazzzeitung - 1 June 2009

"A fresh proof of quality, is the album" Blackbird "by the Munich bassist Henning Sieverts ... Great appearance."

Heribert Ickerott - Jazz Podium - 3 June 2009

         CD of the Day

"Blackbird ... demonstrates that smartly conceived compositions can have a captivating atmosphere and be a lot of fun at the same time ... Henning Sieverts draws on the immense possibilities of the systematic and masterfully exploits synthesis possibilities ..."
