Finzi Quartet
The award-winning Finzi Quartet make their debut recording here with a stunning selection of works by the great English composer Gerald Finzi (1901-1956).

Included is Finzi’s song cycle for baritone and string quartet By Footpath and Stile, Op. 2, featuring the acclaimed young baritone Marcus Farnsworth. The recording also features Finzi’s Interlude for oboe and string quartet with oboist Ruth Bolister and four arrangements for string quartet by Christian Alexander, including the popular Five Bagatelles with clarinettist Robert Plane, recorded here for the first time.

"...Alexander’s faithful arrangements illuminate, rather than obscure, his [Finzi] ideas. The contributions of baritone Marcus Farnsworth, oboist Ruth Bolister, and clarinetist Robert Plane are also first-class. The quality of the recorded sound is excellent, as are the informative notes written by Alexander himslef. All in all, this may well be the best introduction to Finzi I’ve come across. I look forward to hearing the Finzi Quartet agai. Mark my words: These ladies are going places."

"... this is a release of real quality..."

Malcolm Hayes - BBC Music magazine - October 2012

"... Marcus Farnsworth captures the introspective melancholy of the cycle splendidly and the award-winnin Finzi Quartet provide an intimately measured accompaniment, full of nuance and tender hues. They also form part of an expressive ensemble with Ruth Bolister in the wistful, yet at times more extrovertly lyrical Interlude, a work of some substance. The arrangements of the Five Bagatelles, stunningly intimate miniatures originally for piano and clarinet, are sensitively arranged here for clarinet and string quartet by Christian Alexander. They work well, and the scoring for quartet does much to heighten the neo-Baroque polyphony of Finzi’s ccompaniment ..."

Jeremy Dibble - Gramophone magazine - August 2012

"...The rewards here are high."
