Volume 21 contains Bach’s two ‘test’ pieces for the position as Cantor at St Thomas’ in Leipzig, BWV 22 Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe BWV 23 Du wahrer Gott und Davids Sohn. The latter is particularly ingenious and sophisticated. The first album is rounded out by performances of the musically complex and innovative BWV 127 Herr Jesu Christ, wahr’ Mensch und Gott, and BWV 159 Sehet, Wir gehn hinauf gen Jerusalem with its affinities with the two Passions. Album two contains Cantatas for three different Feast Days, and includes BWV 54 Widerstehe doch der Sünde with its spellbinding first aria, and the jubilant and opulently-scored springtime Cantata BWV 1 Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern. Performances are as brilliant and inspired as those of previous issues in this award-winning series.

"A wealth of illuminating musicianship may be felt in every one of these performances"
