Iain Burnside and Ailish Tynan reurn to Signu with their second album of Irish Songs and arrangements - this time from a range of different 20th Century composers. Although all of the sung texts stem from Irelands rich heritage of literature (inlcuding poems from W B Yeats, Thomas Moore and James Joyce), the composers featured here have a more transatlantic feel, with works by John Cage and Samuel Barber programmed alongside others by Benjamin Britten and Herbert Hughes. This album contains Burnside’s series of recital recordings with Signum - in particular his 2007 album with Ailish Tynan of Irish songs by Herbert Hughes, A Purse of Gold (SIG 106): "The word ’arrangement’ as Burnside suggests, doesn’t do justice to the inventive piano writing and pacing of so many of these pieces ... Soprano Ailish Tynan’s feeling for the musical idiom and, above all, the poetry of her countrymen, matched by Burnside’s delightfully poetic pianism, prove irresistable. Highly recommended" ***** - Classic FM Magazine
"...The songs featured have been carefully chosen and well-programmed; the result being a disc of attractive, atmospheric and evocative music... Highlights of this disc for me are the gorgeous To Eire by Arnold Bax, Bahnhofstrasse by C. W. Orr, and Flood by Herbert Howells - all these beautiful songs here given glowing, radiant performances. Certainly a disc that will strongly appeal to any lover of English song or of the enchanting, mysterious country that is Ireland!" Em Marshall-Luck - MusicWeb-International.com - 13 September 2012
"...A most distinctive disc, well recorded, and well worth investigating."
