As 2014 heralds the composer’s 80th year, Harrison Birtwistle remains one of the most popular voices in contemporary composition in the UK and beyond. This new collection of premiere recordings draws together recent commissions with older works to mark the occasion, with characteristically flawless performances from the BBC Singers under Nicholas Kok. They are joined on this album by the Nash Ensemble and baritone Roderick Williams.

                      Critics’ Choice 2014

"...The Moth Requiem is a Requiem to nature in peril and our own wider commemoraion of loved ones lost. This poignant piece engages our full attention for its relatively bief running time."

Adrian Edwards - Gramophone magazine - December 2014

                  Editor’s Choice - Vocal

"I doubt whether anything the year brings for Birtwistle’s 80th birthday is going to dim the lustre of this ecellent recording of his choral music... Terrific stuff, with already the feel of a classics, and admirably served by the BBC Singers plus alto flute and three harps, and the conductor Nicholas Kok ..."

Stephen Plaistow - Gramophone magazine - May 2014

"...The BBC Singers are in a class of their own, giving a stunning interpretation of these complex works."  *****

Shirley Ratcliffe - Choir & Organ magazine - May/June 2014

"... I was hooked from start to finish. We expect virtuosity from the BBC Singers, but this performance leaves one gaping in admiration, as, indeed, do they all. It is impossible to imagine a more favourable way of experiencing this enthralling music than by listening to this superbly engineered and presented release."

William Hedley - International Record Review - May 2014

            Performance *****         Recording ****

"...This is a wonderful and important release of his powerful and often delicate works... This disc is the most fitting tribute imaginable to Birtwistle on his 80th birthday."

Michael Tanner - BBC Music magazine - May 2014
