Recorded live during the London Handel Festival

To mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the 32nd London Handel Festival presented not only an outstanding artistic programme in honour of the great composer, but also the release of his fourth oratorio Joshua on CD. This highly acclaimed performance opened last year’s Festival and was recorded live by SOMM Recordings in collaboration with the London Handel Society.

“…Laurence Cummings is a superb Handelian conductor with a sure sense of style, pacing and narrative, and he fields an excellent team of young British singers. George Humphrey’s authoritative yet sweet singing of ‘Shall I in Mamre’s fertile plain’ is superb, and Catherine Manley’s ‘Hark! ‘tis the linnet’ is ideally supple and affectionate (the accompaniment is beautifully played…)  "Allan Clayton … does a good job of Joshua’s fiendishly tricky solos. I hope to hear much more Handel from these promising singers.”

David Vickers

Gramophone - August 2009

“…Allen Clayton’s youthful vigour and lyrical tenor illuminate Joshua’s aria’s, while soprano Catherine Manley fashions the work’s hit tune, ‘O had I Jubal’s lyre’ with unaffected grace. A small, alert chorus and ace period instrument orchestra bring musical authority and expressive light and shade to proceedings.”…     ****

Andrew Stewart

Classic FM Magazine - June 2009

[Clayton is] “a tenor rapidly making a name for himself, who was suitably heroic in the title role, but always attractive of tone and eloquent of expression.”
Barry Millington
