Julie Boulianne, one of Canada’s most famous lyric artists, is known for her musical intelligence and great sensitivity. For her, 2011 has been packed with prestigious engagements, including her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York singing the roles of Diane in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride and Stefano in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. As well, she recently sang Fragoletto in Offenbach’s Les Brigands at the Opéra de Toulon and at the Opéra-comique de Paris, Lazuli in Chabrier’s L’Étoile at the New York City Opera, Cendrillon in Massenet’s eponymous work at the operas of both Marseille and Montreal, Elisa in Handel’s Tolomeo at the Glimmerglass Opera and, finally, her signature role as the heroine of Rossini’s La Cenerentola.
ATMA presents the first solo recording of Canadian mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne, who is featured in a rarely recorded chamber version of Mahler’s two famous song cycles: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Kindertotenlieder. Julie Boulianne is accompanied by the Orford Ensemble under the direction of Canadian conductor Jean-François Rivest. This recording also features Ms. Boulianne singing a selection of Alma Mahler’s Lieder accompanied by pianist Marc Bourdeau.

Christophe Rodriguez - Le journal de Montréal - 5 November 2011

"... Boulianne’s voice, precise and well balanced with a voluptuous lower register, is ideally suited for this repertoire. Jean-François Rivest conducts a well-balanced ensemble. The album closes with five very attractive songs by Alma Mahler. Accompanied by pianist Marc Bourdeau, Boulianne brings to life the captivating charm of these scarce remnants of Alma’s youthful dreams."

Daniel Foley - The WholeNote - 1 March 2012

Alexandre Lazaridès - La Scena Musicale - 1 December 2011

"...This is a valuable disc for several reasons: it sheds new light on Gustav Mahler’s two song cycles - at least for those who are unfamiliar with the chamber ensemble accompaniments - it puts the spotlight on Alma Mahler’s talent. It also introduces many listeners to the rapidly rising new mezzo-star Julie Boulianne."

Göran Forsling - Musicweb-international.com - 6 July 2012

"...Boulianne is a wonderful Mahler singer. Her sumptuous voice shines in these songs with a lyrical grace..."

R Moore - American Record Guide - March/April 2012

A cunning combination, all beautifully sung, of two of Gustav Mahler’s song cyles, with five gifted songs for voice and piano by Alma" ****

Calum MacDonald - BBC Music magazine - March 2012
