Weinberg: Violin Sonatas, Vol. 1 – Yuri Kalnits, Michael Cányi-Wills

Mieczyslaw Weinberg, born in Warsaw in 1919, became a close friend of Shostakovich in Moscow, after fleeing eastwards before the invading Nazis in 1939. His vast output includes twenty-six symphonies, seven operas, seventeen string quartets, and much other chamber music, as well as some 200 songs. His style has much in common with that of Shostakovich, as these four violin works show: fluent contrapuntal skill, a keen feeling for melody often inflected with Jewish cantilena, and an acute sense of drama that combines a natural narrative manner with an extraordinary ability to create atmosphere, often from just a handful of notes. Weinberg died in 1996, and his music is being discovered by musicians and listeners all around the world.

"...This is an extremely good start to the projected series."
Jonathan Woolf - - 29 February 2012

"The rediscovery of Weinberg’s music continues with a convincing first volume of his violin sonatas... Yuri Kalnits takes the music’s not inconsiderable difficulties in his stride, sustaining his characteristically velvety sound at all dynamic levels, ad gently cushioning Weinberg’s more explosive outbursts with a cantible richness that avoids any hint of modernistic brashness... Michael Csáanyi-Wils proves a highly sensitive and empathetic partners in the accompanied works, and the engineering is both well balanced and atmospheric."

Julian Haylock - The Strad - September 2011

"...This new recording is a much welcome release from Toccata Classics, a label who likes to unearth obscure or neglected works. This recording once again clearly demonstrates that music of this calibre certainly didn’t deserve to be discarded. Hopefully this label has planned on future releases of other chamber works by Weinberg, which would further help in distancing this composer’s name from obscurity. If you enjoy 20th century Russian music, chamber music, Shostakovich, or hearing first recordings of neglected repertoire, than this CD has all of the above and more. Highly recommended!"

Jean-Yves Duperron - Classical Musical Sentinel - July 2011

‘A lot of interest is now concentrated on Weinberg as an independent heavyweight creator in his own right... [pointing] to his likely (and justified) elevation to major composer status. This new CD from Toccata Classics extends that process. [...] [Op. 82 is] a masterpiece of its genre. Yuri Kalnits, whose technique and musicality are tested to the limit... proves a superb exponent of Weinberg’s violin writing. His rich and noble tone and range of colour are matched by an incisive rhythmic sense and above all what seems an intense sympathy and identification with the composer¹s undoubtedly complex musical personality.’

Calum MacDonald - International Record Review - March 2011

‘...Last year, I praised the CPO release of Weinberg’s Violin Sonatas… Well, move over: Toccata Classics has entered the lists with its Vol. 1 of the Complete Violin Sonatas… the Toccata artists (violinist Yuri Kalnits and pianist Michael Csányi-Wills) play with searing intensity… dizzying, breathtaking brilliance, completely at the service of this profound excursion into the cross-section of sound and the human soul. You must hear this.’
