Gouvy: Sérénades for flute and strings – Markus Brönnimann (flute), Ilka Emmert (double-bass), Michael Kleiser (piano), Kreisler Quartet

The rediscovery of the three Sérénades for flute and strings by the Franco-German romantic Théodore Gouvy (1819 – 1898) – two of them commissioned by the Philharmonic Club of New York – brings a welcome expansion to the repertoire of nineteenth-century chamber music for flute. The charming melodic language of Gouvy disguises the expert craftsmanship of a composer who, not belonging to any national school, has not received the attention that his warm-hearted music deserves.

"...The recorded sound is ideal, with just the right perspective and balance and an inviting degree of warmth, and as previously mentioned the program notes are outstanding... lovers of Gouvy or of chamber music for flute should find this disc quite appealing, and it is recommended accordingly."

James A Altena - Fanfare - November/December 2013

"... Flutist markus Bronnimann has a clear, penetrating sound. He and the strings or piano - whichever the case may be - are balanced well, and I can’t imagine this music played any better. It is very satisfying. If this release doesn’t make it onto my Best of Year list, you should know right now that it was very close..."

Todd Gorman - American Record Guide - September/October 2013

"... attractive flute chamber works. Markus Brönnimann is a convincing advocate in these spritely performances." ****

Christopher Dingle - BBC Music magazine (Brief Notes Section) - September 2013
