Joseph Summer: The Garden of Forking Paths – Kalmia String Quartet
This String Quartet by the American composer Joseph Summer is a musical interpretation of the named stories of the pre-eminent twentieth-century fabulist Jorge Luis Borges. Born in 1956, Summer studied at Oberlin and was on the faculty at Carnegie-Mellon. He has written four comic operas based on the stories of The Decameron. These works are part of a planned cycle of seven operas, which follows the exploits of a half dozen characters over the course of a week in an imagined fourteenth-century Naples. He is the founder of The Shakespeare Concerts, his music inspired by Shakespeare appearing on three previously released recordings on Albany Records.
"...This is quite lovely work in five movements - or three, ... all totally listenable ... well worth exploring... The Kalmia plays the music with involvement, and the recording is fine."
