The performances are first rate: polished, poised, vital of rhythm and fully alive to the unusual warmth of Wesley’s lines and textures. I defy any Haydn or Mozart lover with a streak of musical adventure not to enjoy this disc

*****
Not exactly a well known composer but a delightful disc. Wesley was obviously influenced by JC Bach in the first three synphonies, each 3 movements and scored for strings with horns & harpsichord continuo. Very much in the style of JC Bach's sinfonias. By the time of the fourth symphony on the disc Haydn is very much the influence. The symphony has increased to four movements with timpani and wind added to the scoring. Hearing it without knowing the composer I would have said it was one of Haydn's lesser known symphonies. Don't be put off by the Milton Keynes Chamber Orchestra. They are a thoroughly professional outfit sounding on a par with the ASMF and Davan Wetton directs lively and sprightly performances with good recorded sound: highly recommended.
