Mozart: Piano Sonatas, Vol. 1 – Christian Blackshaw

A deeply passionate and sensitive performer, Christian Blackshaw is celebrated for the tremendous emotional depth, great understanding, and incomparable musicality of his performances. He performed Mozart’s complete piano sonatas at the Wigmore Hall during 2012 – 13, and this is the first of four concerts recorded for Wigmore Hall Live. Of these great works, Blackshaw says: ‘to my mind, the sonatas resemble mini operas, even if conceived for and performed by a solo player… For me, they imbue the spirit with joy, laughter, sadness, contemplation, exhilaration.’

Benedetto Ciranna - Musica magazine (Italy) - October 2014

"...Blackshaw really can play Mozart exactly as written, which is more difficult than adding ornamentations and mucking around with the notes for more effect. His tempos are never too fast or too slow, his dynamics are perfectly judged and he never goes to extremes. This is Mozart playing like you’ve never heard it before."    *****

Marius Dawn - Pianist magazine - April/May 2014

"... These recordings are easy to spend a lot of time with, and I look forward to the remaining installments."

Rob Haskins - American Record Guide - January/February 2014

"Not since Lili Kraus more than half a century ago has a pianist tackled Mozart’s 18 piano sonatas with such insight... What these performances convey above all is an intelligence that has livedlong enough with Mozart’s solo piano music to illuminate it richly for 21st-century ears"  *****

Andrew Clarke - Financial Times - 21-22 September 2013

               Instrumental - Choice

"... do we really need another Mozart cycle, and from a relatively unkown pianist in his sixties? ... I dutifully loaded in the CD’s; and within half a minute Blackshaw’s mindful yet spontaneous virtuosity, pinpointed sense of character  and utterly live music-making completly disarmed my scepticism ..."
