An extraordinary collection of Barber performances, most of them never before released, by the composer (Capricorn Concerto, Orchestral Songs, Second Symphony Rehearsal) and such early interpreters of his work as Rodzinski (First Symphony) Toscanini (Adagio, First Essay); Walter (Second Essay), Orlando Cole (Cello Sonata), the Curtis String Quartet (Quartet, Op. 11), Albert Spalding with Ormandy (the Violin Concerto), among others. Several major works are included in both their original and revised versions. Sound restoration: Lani Spahr. Notes in English (by Barbara B. Heyman) and French (by Pierre Brevignon).
“Barber was one of the most subtle and individual voices of American twentieth-century music, and this box is a magnificent celebration of his very personal art.”

Nigel Simeone - International Record Review

"This isn’t just the best release by far for Barber’s anniversary year, it should be compulsory for anyone who cares about American music in the 20th century.”

Andrew McGregor - BBC Music Magazine

“This superlative release has a guaranteed slot on my 2012 Want List, and carries my highest possible recommendation.”

James A Altena - Fanfare
