BIOGRAPHY

Henk Guittart studied viola with Jürgen Kussmaul at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in The Netherlands, and orchestral conducting with Louis Stotijn. In 1974 he founded the Schoenberg Ensemble, of which he was the violist and artistic director until 1990. Since 1976 he has been the violist of the Schoenberg Quartet, with which he has recorded some thirty CDs, the repertoire ranging from Brahms to Dutilleux, and including the complete works for strings by Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, Zemlinsky, Janác?ek, Szymanowski, Pijper, Roussel, Schulhoff and Louis Andriessen. He was head of the chamber music department of the Royal Conservatory from 1979 to 1984, and in the 1990/1991 season was appointed conductor at the Rotterdam Academy of Music and the Maastricht Academy. During the last decade he has been a guest conductor and guest professor at the music academies in Budapest, Princeton, Los Angeles, Dresden, The Hague, Amsterdam, Cologne, Moscow and Stanford. Since autumn 2006 he has served as artistic advisor of music programmes at The Banff Centre in Canada, where he also is a guest faculty for coaching and as conductor during autumn, winter and summer programmes. Henk Guittart has conducted professional symphony orchestras since 1998, performing a wide repertoire that ranges from the Viennese classics to brand new music and includes opera and music theatre. In all, as violinist and conductor, he has made more than sixty recordings.
