BIOGRAPHY

A well-known harpsichordist, organ soloist, and chamber musician, Robert Woolley has performed in North and South America, Japan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and throughout Western Europe. He regularly broadcasts for the BBC, recording on historic organs, harpsichords, clavichords and fortepianos from collections such as those at Fenton House, Hatchlands and Finchcocks, and from the Raymond Russell collection of early keyboard instruments in Edinburgh. In 1984 he co-founded The Purcell Quartet with which he tours regularly and which has played at most of the major European festivals. Robert Woolley was Artist in Residence at Washington University in St Louis and currently is Professor of Harpsichord and Historical Performance at the Royal College of Music, London. His first solo recording was of the complete harpsichord works of Henry Purcell, and his discography also includes works by John Blow, Böhm, Byrd, Frescobaldi, Gibbons, Handel, Scarlatti, Seixas and Tallis, and, with The Purcell Quartet, sacred cantatas by Buxtehude and the complete concertos for harpsichord by J.S. Bach, among many other works. The present disc is the second in a series devoted to Sweelinck’s works for organ, harpsichord and virginal.
