BIOGRAPHYThe Canadian baritone Gerald Finley began singing as a chorister in Ottawa, Canada, and continued his musical studies in the UK at the Royal College of Music, King’s College, Cambridge and the National Opera Studio. He has subsequently become one of the leading singers and dramatic interpreters of his generation, performing to critical acclaim at major opera houses and concert halls in a wide variety of repertoire. His collaborations with leading conductors such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Bernard Haitink, Antonio Pappano, Alan Gilbert and Sir Simon Rattle have formed part of a flourishing career. In opera, his work has been founded on Mozart and Handel, but he has also created numerous leading roles, among them J. Robert Oppenheimer in John Adams’s Doctor Atomic and Harry Heegan in Mark-Anthony Turnage’s The Silver Tassie. He works and records regularly as a recitalist with the pianist Julius Drake. His DVDs of Britten’s Owen Wingrave and Saariaho’s L’Amour de loin have been highly praised. For Chandos, Gerald Finley has recorded Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony and the title role in The Pilgrim’s Progress, and he was the soloist, under Richard Hickox, in the recording of Stanford’s Songs of the Sea and Songs of the Fleet which won the Editor’s Choice and Choral categories at the 2006 Gramophone Awards. |
