BIOGRAPHYHaving studied with Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was made an Associate in 2002, the British-born conductor Rumon Gamba became the first ever conducting student to receive the DipRAM. He then went on to win the Lloyds Bank BBC Young Musicians Conductors Workshop in February 1998 and subsequently became Assistant and then Associate Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic, serving till 2002. Regularly conducting the BBC orchestras, he has appeared at the BBC Proms, and in 2008 made his debut with English National Opera. He is Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, with which he has made highly successful tours of Germany, Austria and Spain. He has had prominent guest conducting engagements with the Munich Philharmonic, NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg, Orchestre national de Belgique, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon. He has worked with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, NAC Orchestra in Ottawa, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Florida Philharmonic Orchestra in North America, has toured Australia conducting the symphony orchestras of Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, and also conducted the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the philharmonic orchestras of Hong Kong, Osaka and Nagoya. Rumon Gamba has given several prominent premieres, including the world premiere of Brett Dean’s Viola Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Per Nørgård’s oratorio The Will O the Wisps Go to Town with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. He records exclusively for Chandos.  |
