BIOGRAPHY

Born in Switzerland in 1948, Mario Venzago began playing piano at the age of five, attended the conservatory and the university in his native Zurich, and continued his studies with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. He assumed the post of Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 2002 and from 2004 to 2007 was Principal Conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (The National Orchestra of Sweden). He had previously served as Music Director of the Basel Symphony Orchestra (1997 – 2003), Basque National Orchestra (1998 – 2001), Graz Opera House (1990 – 1995), Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie (1989 – 1992), Heidelberg Opera (1986 – 1989), Musikkollegium Winterthur (1978 – 1986) and Lucerne Opera House, and he served as principal conductor for the broadcast recordings of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva until 1986. His distinguished conducting career has included engagements with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also conducted at the Salzburg and Lucerne festivals, among many others. His varied discography has earned him several major awards. Mario Venzago has collaborated with such famous stage directors as Ruth Berghaus, Peter Konwitschny and Hans Neuenfels, as well as with the world’s finest concert artists and singers.
