The Spaniard Juanjo Mena is Chief Conductor Designate of the BBC Philharmonic and Principal Guest Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Juanjo Mena has established a reputation as a major force on the conducting scene, delivering performances of the highest quality and style, and will take up his position with the BBC Philharmonic in September 2011. Highlights of 2010/11 include performances with the BBC Philharmonic at The Bridgewater Hall, engagements with the Danish Radio Symphony, Dresden Philharmonic, New Zealand Symphony, Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Barcelona Symphony, Prague Symphony, Houston Symphony and the Orchestre National de Lyon.
Juanjo Mena is one of Spain’s most highly regarded conductors, who works regularly with all the major orchestras in his home country. His future engagements include invitations to the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Sao Paolo Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
His operatic work includes Der fliegende Holländer, Salome, Elektra, Ariadne auf Naxos, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Erwartung. Recent productions include Eugene Onegin in Genoa, Le nozze di Figaro in Lausanne, and Billy Budd and Tristan und Isolde in Bilbao.
