BIOGRAPHY

The Danish National Choir/DR was founded in 1932, its main function to participate in the concerts and oratorio performances of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra/DR. It consists of seventy-four professional singers, eighteen of whom are employed full-time forming the Danish National Vocal Ensemble/DR (known until 2007 as the Danish National Chamber Choir/DR). The Danish National Choir performs with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra chiefly in symphonic choral works, notably in the Orchestra’s regular Thursday Concerts and on CD. Mogens Wöldike dominated the Choir from its founding right up until the 1970s, while the composer Svend S. Schultz served as chorus master from 1945 to 1983. In recent decades the post of Principal Conductor has been held by the English choir director John Alldis (1972–77) and by Per Enevold (1985–88) and the Swedish conductor Stefan Parkman (1989–2002), among others. Stephen Layton was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor in 1999 and in 2007 the young Swedish choral conductor Fredrik Malmberg was appointed Permanent Conductor. The Choir has recorded more than forty CDs for Chandos
