BIOGRAPHY

Amongst the rising stars on the musical scene in Norway, Ragnhild Hemsing stands out as a remarkably poised artist. Her unique upbringing, deeply immersed in the country’s rich folk music traditions, has made her one of the first artists successfully to merge the characteristics of Norwegian folk and classical performance in a fresh and entirely contemporary fashion. She made her debut with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of only thirteen years, and since then has quickly developed into an artist of astonishing versatility, in demand as a concerto soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician, performing a broad range of standard repertoire which she supplements with more unusual and complex works written for the Hardanger fiddle. She has, for example, collaborated with the Norwegian choreographer Hallgrim Hansegård on performances throughout Norway of Yr by Lasse Thoresen, and given numerous performances of the Concerto for Hardanger fiddle and orchestra by Geirr Tveitt. She has performed with all the major Norwegian orchestras and appeared at concert halls and international festivals across Norway and abroad. The recipient of many Norwegian and international prizes, she is a well-known artist on Norwegian radio and TV, for which, with her sister Eldbjørg Hemsing, she recorded a fifty-minute documentary about the Norwegian violinist Ole Bull. Ragnhild Hemsing is continuing her studies, currently taking lessons from Professor Boris Kuschnir in Vienna.
