BIOGRAPHY

Antony Beaumont was born in London of Anglo-German and Romanian-Greek parentage. Though known primarily as an expert on the music of Alexander Zemlinsky and Ferruccio Busoni, he is a musician of remarkable versatility. As a child he studied violin, viola, piano and organ, and at the age of sixteen was already making his name as a conductor, composer and arranger, writing on music for The Daily Telegraph and presenting classical broadcasts for the BBC. After graduating from Cambridge University, where he studied musicology and gained his first experience of symphonic and operatic conducting, he spent two seasons as an orchestral violinist in London. Subsequently he settled in Germany, where he worked as Kapellmeister in Saarbrücken, Bremen and at Cologne Opera. He has guest-conducted at English National Opera, Bavarian State Opera and Prague State Opera, and at music festivals in Montepulciano, Prague, Siena, Spoleto and the Canary Islands. His publications include important monographs on Busoni and Zemlinsky, the diaries of Alma Mahler and the letters of Gustav Mahler. For Chandos Antony Beaumont has recorded the complete symphonic works of Zemlinsky with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
