BIOGRAPHY

Founded in 1996, Tempesta di Mare is named after Vivaldi’s concerto of that title, and means ‘storm at sea’. It produces baroque orchestral, operatic, oratorio, and chamber music performances for its home concert series, touring, recording, and broadcast. It launched its Greater Philadelphia Concert Series in 2002, which has since grown to a five-production series that has included staged opera, operatic music with puppet staging, oratorio, and instrumental music, with numerous modern world, national, and regional premieres. The Philadelphia City Paper has noted the ensemble’s ‘zest and virtuosity that transcend style and instrumentation’, while The Philadelphia Inquirer called its ‘Grand Orchestra’ series ‘a major revelation’, praising its ‘near-choreographic sense of interplay’. Tempesta di Mare has toured since 1996, and has visited the Prague Spring Festival, Czech Republic, Oregon Bach Festival, Frick Collection in New York, Berlin Sing-Akademie, and Göttingen Handel Festival, where the Göttinger Tageblatt praised its ‘technical virtuosity, interpretatively lucid music making and masterful creative will’. Tempesta di Mare has been recording exclusively for Chandos since 2004, to worldwide popular and critical acclaim.
